What is a Certified Pedorthist (C.Ped.)?
A certified Pedortihist (C.Ped.) is a professional whose competence in the practice of pedorthics is credentialed by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics, Inc.
The practice of pedorthics by a certified pedorthist inherently includes both prescriptive and non-prescriptive work because of the universal use of footwear. As a member of the health care team, a C.Ped. plays an important role in the patient’s foot care; however, a certified pedorthist shall not diagnose, prescribe, provide medical prognosis, or perform invasive procedures. A written order/prescription is required for any pedorthic device, modification, and/or prefabricated below the knee anatomical support addressing a medical condition. A C.Ped. fits, fabricates, adjusts, modifies, or transfers devices which reflect his/her certification.
What is an Orthotist?
An orthotist, (C.O.) is certified by the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (A.B.C.). They measure, design, fabricate, fit service, and/or assist in the formulation of orthoses. C.O. is not limited to the foot and ankle. An orthosis is a device that is intended to be fitted to a person to correct a disability, or to support the part of the anatomy that is affected by the disability. Orthoses are usually prescribed by a licensed physician.
The Foot Performance Center employs a Board Certified Orthotist so we may treat and fill prescriptions that affect all lower extremity deficiencies. We believe that when fitting lower extremity orthoses, a large inventory of footwear should be available for fitting and insuring optimum outcomes.
